Track
The track team ended its outdoor season under the lights at Maine West on May 23 with the conference meet. Maine South won the meet, while Niles North and Maine West took second and third, seven points off the pace.
In dual-meet competition this year, the cindermen were undefeated in the outdoor conference, while losing one meet indoors. The Warriors compiled a 5-2 record with the non-conference teams, with one loss at the hands of Proviso West, last year's state champs.
The indoor conference saw Maine West take third, again behind Niles North and Maine South. West placed third at the Viking Relays and seventh at the Blue Demon Relays.
Perhaps the biggest surprise, according to Coach Joe Jobst, was the second place the cindermen took at Waukegan Wish the depth needed to place high in such a meet. Maine West collected more points than schools such as Waukegan, Niles North Harlem, and Thornton.
Tennis
For the third year in a row the Maine West tennis team won the Maine West Invitational Meet. The Warriors also placed fourth in their district this year.
In non-conference meets Maine had a respectable 4-1 record, losing their first meet to Niles East 4-1. The racketmen found the conference a bit tougher and came up with a 3-4 record.
This year was a year of ups and downs for the team, winfour matches 4-1 and losing three matches 5-0 and one match 4-1. The Warriors placed fourth in their district this year.
Coach Roger King will have four returning lettermen to work with next year.

Golf
Coach Gene Zuccarini's golf squad could not hold off teams like New Trier West and Glenbrook North, thereby placing sixth in the conference meet on May 24. Maine finished nine strokes ahead of Niles West and 12 ahead of Niles North.
During the regular season the stickmen compiled a record worthy of fifth place in the conFerence standings. Their nonconference record this year was 0-2, while they placed sixteenth in the big Wheeling Invitational.
Getting back to the dual meets the Warriors lost their first two meets to Arlington and Wheeling by only two strokes. They took it on the nose when they were beaten by Downers Grove North by 16 strokes, but two meets later came back to defeat Niles North by 15.
Baseball
Coach Carstens' baseball team closed the season with a 4-3 loss to New Trier West on May 24. The game was postponed earlier while the Warriors had a 2-0 lead.
The diamondmen finished the non-conference season with a 3-1 record and played near .500 ball in the conference games. West won both of their games with Niles North and Deerfield, lost both of their games with New Trier West and Maine South, and split with the remaining teams.
The obvious problem the Warriors had this year was the lack of experience. With three returning lettermen and a few more seniors, many juniors and a couple sophomores were called upon.
Maine West lost six of its games by one run, and Coach Carstens explained that these are the games that a ball club should win.
Despite the drafting of some of the ball players to the varsity, the sophomores shut out New Trier West 8-0 and clinched the conference championship w it h an overall record of 16-1. Their only loss came on May 9 when they met Niles North and lost 5-2. The freshman had a 14-3 season record, and their conference championship is under recognition.
