On Saturday, October 18, at Glenbrook South's Schiller Park Woods the Maine West Warriors proved once again that, at least cross country‑wise, "West is best" when they solidly trounced all competition to take the CSL crown. This marked the third year in a row that Maine West has won the conference championship, tying Arlington in 1966 in the Mid Suburban League race and taking it for the past two years in the Central Suburban League.
Maine's Bob Glitz '69 turned in his usual outstanding performance when he sprinted through the chute in first place at 13:19.9, three seconds ahead of Glenbrook North's ace Peter Farwell.
Other than Farwell a n d Brooks of Niles West who finished third with a 13:46, it was all Maine. Senior Gary Wolf took fourth place at 13.50 followed closely by Mike Wolf '69 with 13:51 and Marc Forkins '69 fashioning a 13:53. Junior Steve Johnson rounded out the West scorers in seventh place sporting a time of 13:55.
Although they didn't figure in the scoring, Warriors Al Schank '69 and Jerry Krainik '70 also turned in excellent performances with respective places of eleventh and thirteenth with times of 14:11 and 14:13.

After the results were finally tallied, the Warriors were declared the winners and conference champs with only 23 points, 68 points ahead of second place finisher Deerfield. Maine South managed to come within one point of Deerfield with a 92, but that was as close as anyone came to catching the Warriors.
Though still running a good meet, the sophomore Warriors weren't quite as successful as the varsity, finishing second behind Maine South with 49 points. Maine West sophomore Scott Gyssler, brought down from varsity for the conference meet, was the individual star of the race, scrambling across the finish line in first place at 9:52. Tim Watkins who finished eighth clocked at 10:19 was the only other runner West could place in the top 10.
The freshmen runners gave Maine West their second victory of the day when they, too, downed all their league opponents.
This victory places Maine West as one of the top contenders going downstate when they compete tommorrow at Maine East in the district meet.
