Lise, Bruce Direct V‑Show

Do you know who this year's V‑Show director is? Perhaps you've seen her running madly through the halls, or perhaps you've heard her in the auditorium after school. This 5'7", blond‑haired, blue‑eyed senior is none other than Lise Pahnke, sometimes called "Pancake" by many of her friends.

And just what does a V‑Show director do? In Lise's opinion, "A V‑Show director organizes, selects, develops, and works in a schedule for the acts." This is really a big job for anyone.

Lise, who is a member of Student Council, was nominated and elected by Student Council last spring and began drawing up plans at that time. She worked dilligently throughout the summer, and her efforts are quite apparent in this year's V‑Show.

In Lise's opinion, "Maine has a lot to offer. Take advantage of its many opportunities and get involved."

Asked how she could improve Maine, Lise replied, "Try to instill better school spirit and loyalty in the students. This is really important."

Lise's other extracurricular activities include Class Council, Senior Prom chairman, Student Council, Ski Club, Thespian Society Pep Club, and Concert Choir. Needless to say, Lise has very little spare time.

She has been active in both drama and music since she began high school at Maine. She participated in V‑Show in former years and has been active in the musical productions. Last year, Lise played the role of Mae Peterson in Bye Bye Birdie.

After her graduation from Maine, Lise plans to attend Illinois State University where she will major in special education. She would also like to join the Peace Corps if at all possible.

Bruce Nelson is perhaps one of the most colorful and original students at Maine West.

Bruce, a senior this year, is an active member of the Maine West band. His drumming talents were exemplified last year in V‑Show. Currently he is drumming for a jazz group known as The Ted Wagner Quintet.

Bruce's other musical interests include "the great James Brown" and the "immortal genius Ray Charles." He says that these two performers are unequaled in the entertainment world.

Bruce Nelson also enjoys observing politics. This interest includes watching the war effort.

"I feel that our men have suffered for too long in South Viet Nam, and we should put an end to this ludicrous war immediately."

When asked about the demonstrations during the Democratic National Convention, Bruce replied. "The police were unnecessarily violent. The way the police beat up the demonstrators was inhuman."

When asked what he does for amusement, Bruce replied, "I go downtown and stand on a street corner. Then I put a hole in a piece of paper and look at people through it. It's really funny the way some people look at me."

Bruce's pet peeves include monotony. He also dislikes "following the same path everyone else does.

"I hate to do things that everyone else is doing. My ideas are original."

For those who aren't aware of the fact, Bruce is a widely publicized person. He was featured in half a dozen pictures in Haskell Harr, a music book, and will be on the cover of Jake Jerger's new book of music. He considers this quite an accomplishment.

Bruce would like to attend Indiana University and major in applied music. He says he would "rather play music than teach it.''

His favorite comedian is the late Lenny Bruce, whom he feels was one of the best.

When also asked how he spends his weekends, Bruce replied, "If I told you, they would arrest me."
