College Tests To Challenge Students

There are various upcoming college tests for juniors and seniors. Any seniors who have not taken the American College Test are urged to register as soon as possible. Juniors will not be taking the SAT or the ACT until spring of this year.

"It is advantageous," according to Mr. James Killam, career counselor, "for students to take both the ACT and the SAT tests, since they are required for college entrance. Although most state supported colleges require only the ACT test, it is wise for the student to have both tests completed if they are not sure what college they will be attending."

Plans have started between Maine Township and Niles Township for a junior college to be built for students in these districts. If these plans are approved by the voters, it may be easier for more students to attend junior college.

"At the present time, there is no district junior college. Because of a state law, Maine Township must pay out‑of‑district tuition for each student who attends a junior college," Mr. Killam stated. "If we had a junior college within the district, it would be much easier for more students to attend college; and this tuition could be eliminated."

Beginning next year, another change will take place for the students' benefit. At Harper and Triton Junior Colleges classes will be held during the day, instead of at night as they are now. They will be run as regular colleges are, except no students may live on campus for they must commute.

Last month Maine West hosted the Fall College Night. Representatives from approximately 130 colleges and universities were present, providing any information they could about their schools. Close to 1,500 parents and students from all Maine Township High Schools attended.

Mr. Killam reported that "Many nice compliments were paid by the college representatives about the hospitality of Maine West."
