Readers' Theater To Present Play

"Locus is a Latin word which means place or spot. In the regular theater it means the place where all the action is, the stage. But in the Readers' Theater, the locus is created in the mind," explained Mr. Robert Norris, Drama I teacher.

Readers' Theater, sponsored by the Speech Club, was developed for a contest which is to be held on the twenty‑second and twenty‑third of November at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. The play which is to be presented is "The Bald Soprano" by Eugene lonesco.

Tryouts for Readers' Theater were held on October 22 and 23. Those who were chosen for parts are Maureen O'Brien '69, as Mrs. Martin; Ned Peterson '71, as Mr. Martin; Rhonda Sundquist '69, as Mrs. Smith; Jim Hoekstra '69, as Mr. Smith; Bonnie Bridwell '70, as Mary the maid; and Chris Devoney '71, as the fire chief.

"This is a recent form of theater," Mr. Norris stated, "where the actors themselves create the mood, setting, and the tone. No sets or props are used, and only in some cases are costumes used."

Mr. Norris, in charge of the production of "The Bald Soprano," hopes that Readers' Theater will be able to do this play for the English classes next semester. Hopefully, the play will be presented in the library's lecture hall, which is close to being completed.
