Mr. Killam Visits Annapolis

"Those students who are seriously considering a career as a naval officer should visit the academy before becoming a midshipman," advised Mr. James Killam, career counselor at Maine West.

Mr. Killam was among 30 counselors who visited Annapolis Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

The counselors left Great Lakes Naval Base October 16 for the academy. They flew out on a military aircraft and were escorted by three naval reserve officers.

The counselors spent three days at the academy observing midshipmen activities and attending lectures on admission requirements. They also attended a parade at the academy where a naval officer and a marine private both received medals for acts of heroism in Viet Nam.

The Naval Academy is about 35 miles from Washington, D.C. It has very strict discipline None of the midshipmen can drive cars, and all are on the honor system. The enrollment is about 4,200. The teaching staff is about 50 per cent civilian and 50 per cent naval officers.
