Debaters Compete In ISU Contest

Last Friday and Saturday, November 22 and 23, 20 students attended an overnight speech contest held at University High School which is on the campus of Illinois State University at Normal, Illinois.

The contest included competition in several areas: Debate, Readers' Theater, and Individual speech events. Four of Maine's top debaters competed in six rounds of debate involving competition with 40 other schools from all over the state.

The Readers' Theater group presented their play Friday night in Stroud Auditorium which was open to the public. Nine other schools participated in this event.

Individual events were held Friday night and Saturday night with the championship round being held just before the climactic banquet held at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Accompanying the group were Mr. Merel Marine, Debate coach; Mr. Robert Norris, Readers' Theater director; and Mr. Dougas Blatt, Individual speech events coach. The students and their chaperons stayed in a motel situated near the university.

Debaters Craig Dudczak '69, Mary Jo Gigante '70, Karen Gatsis '70, and Mark Millonas '70 went down state. Jill Fedder '71, Jim Glazer '69, Diane Franzen '69, Rich Wilson '69, Linda Naslund '70, Diane Clarke '69, Connie Grimes '69, Sandy Salerno '71, Toni Hein '70, and Diane Gatsis '72 participated in the individual events competition.

Maureen O'Brien '69, Jim Hoekstra '69, Bonnie Bridwell '70, Ned Peterson '71, Rhonda Sundquist '69, and Chris DeVoney '71 took part in the Readers' Theater competition.
