Warrior Bucketmen To Open 68‑69 Season at Forest View

Maine West's winter sports season will begin today with the debut of the Warrior swimming, wrestling, and basketball teams.

Tonight the Warrior netmen will face the Forest View Falcons, hoping to win this non-conference game that will begin their new season.

The junior varsity will play their game at 6:45, and the varsity will move onto the court at 8 p.m. Both games will be played at Forest View.

The Warriors did not play the Falcons last year so it should be an interesting game. "We'll be as ready as anybody else," declared head Coach Gaston Freeman.

As with any other sport, getting in shape is an important part of the early practice schedule. Coach Freeman is stressing defense and ball control this year, but he hasn't left out the offense either. He concluded, "Our control of the boards and our ball control are important, but we'll run if we have the chance."

The Warrior swimming team, headed by Coach Pete Andersen, will travel to Proviso West at 4:30 p.m. Coach Andersen stated, "In previous dual meets Proviso West has beaten us by a few points, but when we meet them later on in the season in invitationals, we seem to be in much better shape." He added that Proviso West's Korinek, who is their top man in the breaststroke, has done a 1:04 in the 100‑yard event.

Mr. Andersen expects team leaders like Ted Loska '69, Terry Stoner '69, Jim Liliquist '69, and Skip Parent '71 to come through for the team this year.

Coach Andersen concluded, "I'm pushing the boys hard, but it's the price they will have to pay if they want to win. The one problem we have is lack of experience because we have many sophomores and freshmen on varsity. The one thing I know is we'll have a surprise in store for somebody this year."

Coach Dick Carlini and the wrestling team will begin their new season with a dual meet at Prospect at 7 p.m. Coach Carlini thinks that Prospect has a good team this year even though we did not meet them last year.

Coach Carlini expects his four returning lettermen: Jim Webster '69, Jim Morrison '69, Gary Waecker '70, and Tom Mietus '69, to lead the team this year.
