Why did 5' 6 1/4" Dave Zulawski '69 go out for football all four of his high school years? According to Dave, "Back in fourth grade, when everyone was 3' 1" and weighed about 38 pounds, I decided to be a football player. That was before I knew I wasn't going to grow much more."
Even so, height doesn't seem to make a difference. Dave was recently chosen to play on the Central Suburban League All-Conference football team. He was picked as a guard and a line‑backer and has as teammates 21 other boys selected by their coaches for their outstanding skill at their game.
He was the only one chosen from Maine West. Dave's attitude about his height is "I can't see any sense in growing fast. You just lose your sense of coordination." Besides participating in football, Dave shows equal interest in baseball. He has also gone out for baseball since his freshman year.
As for the outlook for this year's baseball team, Dave replied, "We'd better win. Coach Albert Carstens gets very belligerent if we don't!"

Dave feels that all boys should try to participate in a sport at some time during their four years at Maine. "Even if you are not the most gifted athlete," Dave comments, "you should at least try. I think this is very important."
During the school year Dave prefers not to have a part‑time job. "Practicing after school for sports," he says, "takes a lot of time and energy. It seems the coaches work us out with the idea of making us fall asleep by the time we hit the showers."
In Maine West's scholastic program, Dave feels that a lot of time is wasted on trivial things that were already taught in junior high. Dave believes, "Maine West should have more courses that make you think."
For amusement, Dave says, "I like to play touch football and other sports. I do the things that any 'regular' boy likes to do."
This year Dave is taking a geology course offered at Maine West. He says, "This course has opened up a completely new world for me. I am seriously thinking of studying geology after high school."
After graduation Dave plans to attend college at Western Illinois.
