Concert Sparks Holiday Spirit

Strains of Christmas carols and folk songs filled the halls last Friday night, December 13, as the Maine West Music Department presented its annual Christmas Concert.

The program began with an organ prelude by Sue Chamberlin '70. The Concert orchestra then presented "Overture from the Royal Fireworks Music." The String Orchestra, with Mary Ann Kucharski as harpist, then played "Ave Maria." "The Carillon" by the Bell Choir followed. The orchestra then presented "Variations on Joy to the World," and "Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly."

The first choral group was the Combined Girls' Choruses. They sang "The Friendly Beasts," directed by Mr. Jerome Swanson, the student teacher from North Park College. A German folk song "Still, Still, Still" followed. The choruses were accompanied by Debbie Paulin '70.

The male choruses, accompanied by Peg Winkleman '71, sang "A Child is Born in Bethlehem" and "Willie, Take Your Drum."

The Girls' Glee followed singing "Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones" again directed by Mr. Swanson. Also included were "Deo Gracias" from A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten and "Do You Hear What I Hear?" Vicki Harrison '71 was the accompanist.

|Following the Show Band, the Choraliers sang "Behold That Star" and "Sleep, Baby Jesus," a Brazilian folk song. Marilyn Lussky '70 played the flute for the latter number with Peg Winkleman accompaning both numbers.

The Concert Choir concluded the program with a cantata, "The Christmas Story," by Ron Nelson, a native of Joliet, Illinois. The Choir was accompanied by Mr. James Thunder at the organ. Ned Peterson '71 was the narrator and Jim Hockstra'69 was the soloist.
