MW Student Politics Way Into Inaugural Ball

Richard Brown '69 recently received an invitation to attend the Presidential Inauguration on January 20. He was also invited to attend the Inaugural Ball.

Rich explained, "Each event requires a separate invitation. More invitations for the ball were sent out than for the Presidential Inauguration. I feel quite honored to have received both invitations." Mr. Robert Jucket, Illinois state representative; and Mr. Floyd Fulle, member of Maine West's Republican Board with whom Rich worked in the Republican campaign, recommended him for the invitations. Rich says, "I was happy and shocked when they told me I was to be recommended for the invitations and even happier when I received them."

This year Rich is taking the special government course offered at Maine West. Through this class he became active in the Republican campaign. Out of the government classes 16 Republicans and 16 Democrats were chosen to be political interns. They were allowed to work with their party, meet candidates, campaign, and attend dinners.

To become political interns they had to obtain applications and have the recommendations of their history teachers, the History Department, their counselors, and parents. This relieved the school of any responsibility.

"I will be traveling with the Illinois delegation and will be gone about four days. The Illinois delegation plans to stay at the Statler Hilton and Connecticut Hotels in Washington," says Rich.

Rich is very interested in politics and says he "loves it." He considers the trip very worthwhile and important and hopes to benefit from it.

At Eastern Illinois next year, Rich will major in Business Education. He plans to become involved in the Young Republicans and other Republican activities.
