MW Debaters To Welcome Tournament

The second annual Invitational Debate Tournament will be held at Maine West this year on February 8. About 20 top schools will be invited, including the defending state champs.

Three levels will be competing: varsity, junior‑varsity, and novice. Trophies will be given to the two top teams in each division.

Volunteers are needed to be guides and timekeepers and are asked to see Mr. Merel Marine. The time of the tournament will be from 8 am, to about 4:30 p.m.

The novice team received two trophies in past tournaments by taking second place at Elk Grove on November 2 after defeating 25 schools. The same team also took first place out of 40 schools at Evanston on November 16.

In another debate tournament the varsity team placed sixth in a total of 40 schools on December 7 at Rockford College. At Thornridge, the junior‑varsity placed third out of 20 schools. Mike Mlodock '70, received a third place speaker award from a total of 80 participants.

On their most recent debate, the novice team placed third at New Trier West on January 10 and 11.

The debaters also participate in the National Forensic League, a nationwide speech activity. Twenty‑five points compiled from speech events are needed to join this honorary organization.

The debate topic this year is "Resolved: That the United States should establish a system of compulsory service by all citizens." With many boys coming of draft age, it bears some looking into.
