Maine West's varsity, sophomore, and freshman swim teams ended last year with a triple sweep over Maine South. The sophomores racked up a 58‑37 decision, while the freshmen handed Maine South a 59‑35 defeat.
The varsity's win was a thriller. The boys opened the meet with a loss in the medley relay, which put them at an immediate disadvantage. Tom Peterson '70, however, won the 200‑yard free style by a touch to put Maine back in the contest.
Maine West dropped the next event, the 50‑yard free style but Ted Loska '69, came back with a fine job in the individual medley and won over Maine South's best‑Martilla. Dave Benton '69 came in third for West.
The diving team come out with the first and second place honors, and in the 100‑yard butterfly Maine West placed second and third. A loss in the 100‑yard free style put the tankmen in serious trouble.

The only way in which Maine West could possibly win was to finish one‑two in the breaststroke and to win the 400‑yard free style. Needless to say, West pulled it off and sent last year out with a bang. Coach Pete Andersen had warm words for the sophomores and added he was "happy to leave 1968 on a winning note."
Coach Andersen had praise for his sophomore standouts, especially for Skip Parent '71, a school record holder; Eric Dahl '71, who in Coach Andersen's words "Gives us more depth in distance"; Scott Gyssler '71, in the sprints; Paul Stenstrom '71, in the breaststroke; and Don Hudson '72, in the butterfly events.
Varsity standouts who were pointed out by Coach Andersen include Tom Peterson '70, who is the top hope in the distance races; Terry Stoner '69, a sprint man; Ted Loska '69, in the individual medley, of whom Coach Andersen says, "He is back is the form of a year ago"; and Jim Lillquist '69, who has been sick but is now working to get back into shape.
Maine West has a big meet today, January 17, with Deerfield at home; and tomorrow they travel to Hinsdale South for a Collegiate Invitational meet, the first ever for Maine West.
