Sports Slants

By Coach Peter Andersen

The Warrior tankmen are on the move in a year‑round program to develop their aquatic skills. In the fall they go through prescribed exercises with their homemade barbells in the intramural program. From November to March they practice by swimming 2 1/2 to 3 miles a day.

I advocate that they swim year‑round. My philosophy is the faster one swims this season the easier it becomes to swim even faster the next season. Swimmers come to know such phrases as "hurt‑pain‑agony," "ham‑n‑egger," "bum," and A.N.R. For all this hard work they gave me a box of 3,500 gum balls and a huge "Peanuts" Christmas card. Now whenever he reaches his best time, a swimmer gets a gum ball.

The future looks bright for the Warriors. All of the sophomore school record holders coached by Mr. Retel have been kept on their own level for conference meets. As a result, they've had some close meets with Glenbrook South, New Trier West, and almost upset the conference champs, Deerfield, last meet.

With a record of five wins and losses, the varsity team is host to Niles West tonight at 7:30; the frosh meet at 6:15. In my opinion, West can win if all of our boys meet the challenge with superb efforts.

Varsity standouts this year include such boys as Jim Lillquist, Lance Kuntze, Ted Loska, Tom Peterson, Steve Loska, Bruce Vosburgh, and Terry Matyja. Other standouts would have to be Royle Epperson, Bill Hall, Terry Stoner, Steve Hurtt, Gary Larsen, Dave Benton, Steve Sperling, and Jack Branding.

The frosh team, coached by Mr. Jorndt, is having one of its best seasons in years. One of the serious problems the Warriors have had has been lack of depth. This year, though, 50 boys reported for the team. I feel many of the boys possess the qualities to become good swimmers. They have desire; that's what counts. However, the key to their success lies with their summer swimming. It is all very simple. They have to pay the price.
