It's What's Happening

Maine West has many clubs which offer benefits and enjoyment. It's happening at Maine West, and all students are eligible to get in on the action.

Members of the Speech Club recently competed in their own tournament February 1 at Maine West. This is the first year Maine has sponsored a speech tournament. Mr. Douglas Blatt, sponsor of Speech Club, feels, "Our tournament was very successful; everything ran smoothly. We hope we can continue having a tournament each year."

There were about 28 schools at the tournament, with a total of 500‑600 participants. Thornridge High School took first place, with Maine West capturing the second place trophy.

Cheri Wittbold '71 won a second place certificate in Children's Prose. This is a new event sponsored in this year's tournament.

Senior Leaders are now involved in completing a program consisting of guest speakers who talk to the girls. This program was first initiated this year. On January 27 Mrs. Mary Jane Snyder spoke to the Senior Leaders on "Sex and the Single Leader."

The next guest speaker date is February 24. The speaker will be Miss Hortense Love who will speak on "Teenage Gangs."

Barb Bednarz '69, president of Senior Leader Board, says the purpose of these speakers is "to show the girls the opportunities in leadership, besides that of the physical education field, and to help them prepare for problems in society."

Aquiana is busily preparing for their next swim show. Clinics were held on January 28 and February 4 and 7. During these clinics current members of the Aquiana Club taught anyone who was interested in trying out for the show.

Miss Carol Davis, sponsor of Aquiana, will judge the girls, along with other qualified members of the Aquiana Club. Tryouts' will be held today from 3:45 to 5 p.m. and on February 18, 5:45 to 7 p.m. Members in the club will have the chance to participate in the show. As long as they remain in the club, they are automatically included in future shows without further tryouts.

Miss Davis declares, "We judge the girls on a point basis. We will take as many girls as qualify, whether there are five girls or 30 girls." She continues to say, "We are particularly interested in freshmen and sophomores because they will be able to continue for more than one year."
