Maine West Sports Recap Shows Success, Failure

The Maine West Warrior cagers lost another close one last weekend, this time to New Trier West. The score was 57‑45, and again the game was closer than the score would indicate. The Cowboys are state ranked; and the last time these two teams met, New Trier overwhelmed West by a score of 84‑51. Senior center Terry Mustoe led the visitors attack while retaining his title as leading scorer in the Central Suburban League.

Maine fought hard and never gave up. At one point in the fourth quarter they closed the gap to two points but failed to go ahead. New Trier scored only one more field goal than Maine, but they held a tremendous edge from the free throw line.

Tonight the Warriors entertain Glenbrook North, with Glenbrook South on the card tomorrow night. A double victory could move West into a solid hold on fifth place in the league standings.

The host varsity Warriors lost a heart‑breaker to Riverside‑Brookfield on Saturday, February 8, by a score of 48‑47. Coach Peter Andersen's sophomores, however, came up with a fine effort and beat Riverside 49‑46.

On Friday, February 7, the Warrior tankmen traveled to Glenbrook North and met a tough group of "blivitts." The varsity squad was swamped by a score of 71‑24 while Maine's usually strong sophomore team was beaten 52‑43. The freshman were also beaten by Glenbrook 58‑37.

Maine West hosted Niles West on Monday, January 31, and the varsity team was beaten 63‑22. The freshmen, however, had, according to Mr. Andersen, "a perfect meet" while beating their opponents. The sophomore squad came up with a solid win.

Even though the varsity lost, several Warriors performed excellently. Jim Lillquist tied his best time in the 100‑yard backstroke with a 101.6 while Lance Kuntze turned in a 107.8 breast stroke, the third fastest breaststroke in Maine West history.

Tonight at 4:30 the Warrior gymnastics team will be host to the New Trier West Cowboys in the B‑wing gym.

On February 7 the gymnasts lost a heartbreaker to Niles West, 102.05‑99.75. Jim Janssens '69 won the high bar event with 6.4 points. Tom Tyler '69 and Janssens placed second and third on the trampoline with 6.1 and 6.0.

Bob Suda '69 took second place on the parallel bars with 7.4 points while Rich Didier '69 placed third with 6.9. Al Van Ornum '69 came up with 6.2 points to take second in the free exercise.

The only other winner for Maine was Bob Moehling '69 as he scored 7.0 points to take the sidehorse. Kurt Nagel '69 placed second with 6.0. The only Warrior who placed on the rings was Bryan Ways '69 taking third place with 6.4 points.

On February 4 Maine surprised Hersey when they came up with a 93‑90 victory.

The Maine West wrestling team ended their regular season last Friday with a convincing 32‑10 victory over conference foe Niles West. The Warriors final conference record stands at 5‑2.

In Friday's meet, the Warriors won eight matches, lost two, and tied two. Winning for the Warriors were Bruce Beam '71 with a pin at 95 pounds, Rick Fielden '69 at 120 pounds, Bruce Barringer '70 at 133 pounds, and Steve Waecker at 145 pounds.

Also winning were Jim Morrison, who remains undefeated at 154 pounds, Tom Mietus '69 at 165 pounds, Bill Tillman '70 at 180 pounds, and Dave Boesche '70 at heavyweight.

Bill Beam and Bob Wolfgram tied their opponents, while Jim Webster '69 and Kevin Sherwood '69 dropped their matches by scores of 3‑2 and 4‑2 respectively.

The district wrestling meet will be held at Forest View tonight and tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
