Four Editors Attend U of I Convention

On Friday and Saturday, September 12 and 13, the editors of the Legend and Westerner and their sponsor, Mr. George Walker, attended the forty‑ninth annual Illinois State High School Press Association Convention. The convention was held at the University of Illinois.

Representing the Westerner were Peg Roberts, editor‑in-chief, and Betty Handler, associate editor. The Legend representatives were Carolyn Toren, editor‑in‑chief, and Karen Raack, business manager. All the girls are seniors.

All four girls attended the opening convocation. Carole Simpson of WBBM radio gave the address "If I Were 17."

Peg and Betty then went to two workshop sessions entitled "The Press of the Underground" and "The Fine Art of Editing." Carolyn and Karen attended three separate sessions. Karen listened to lectures on "The Business Side of Yearbooks" and "Good Layout is Basic," while Carolyn attended sessions titled "Graphic Design and Commercial Art" and "A Contemporary Design for Yearbooks."

During this time Mr. Walker spoke to various representatives and other high school newspaper and yearbook advisers.

All four editors and Mr. Walker attended the closing convocation given by Henry DeZutter, an education editor for the Daily News. His talk was entitled "From Vista to ISHSPA."
