Senior's To Compete On
'It's Academic'

Selected from a group of 13 seniors, who auditioned at the Merchandise Mart, are Jan Ingles, Karen Raack, and Jim Volberding ‑ this year's team to represent Maine West on the competitive television program, "It's Academic." Cathy Bean and Sue Chamberlain are substitutes who will be on hand to relieve any team member in case of emergency or sickness.

These seniors were chosen on the basis of class rank, recommendation of their teachers, and how well they scored on various kinds of testing. Since the program will cover many different subjects, the contestants have to be well‑versed in math, English, history, science, and general knowledge.

Winners of the program will receive a $100 saving bond for their school; the losing team will get a $25 bond for the same purpose. This money is used for next year's auditioning expenses, and the money left over goes toward spectator transportation fees.

According to Miss Nickelson, who is sponsoring our team, the program will provide "an excellent opportunity to meet with talented students from other schools." She further explained that the philosophy of "It's Academic" is that "it's only a game" and involves a lot of fun and interest.

Students interested in being in the audience should sign up in the bookstore. There is a limit of 35 students for each school participating.

This is the fifth year that Maine has competed in the show. Last year it won the initial round. The show is on Saturday afternoons at 5.
