Gridmen Tie South's Hawks,
Lose to Arlington 10-0

Tomorrow afternoon at 2 the Maine West varsity football team will meet the Deerfield Warriors at Deerfield. The sophomores will begin their game at noon prior to the varsity contest.

Last Saturday at Maine South the Warriors proved they are not to be taken lightly this year by tying the Hawks 13‑13. One note worth mentioning is that the Warriors did not lose to the Hawks, for this is the first time in our short history that they haven't.

With 4:06 left in the first quarter, the Hawks scored on a three‑yard running play up the middle. In the second quarter the Warriors blocked a Maine South punt which left them on the Hawk 35. Two plays later Bill O'Neill '70 ran around left end to tie the score at 7‑7.

After a Hawk defender interfered with a Bill Priester '70 pass, the Warriors found themselves on the Maine South 16‑yard line. Maine West then went ahead when Mark Kuzich '70 caught a pass in the end zone to leave the score at 13‑7.

Late in the final quarter a short kick put the Hawks on the Warrior 26‑yard line. Six plays later Maine South scored and like the Warriors could not convert the extra point.

On September 12 Maine West gave the Arlington Cardinals their best game in two years, but were shut out by a 10‑0 score.

The only touchdown of the game came when a Warrior halfback fumbled as he tried to turn the corner. The Arlington linebacker picked it up and scampered 15 yards down the right sideline for the score.

The closest the Warriors got to the Cardinal goal line was the 35‑yard line, but late in the game they began a sustained drive. Maine marched to midfield before another fumble occurred, leaving Arlington with the ball in Warrior territory. A few minutes later they successfully attempted a 15‑yard field goal, ending the scoring at 10‑0.

The junior‑varsity lost their game to Arlington 18‑6. The only score for Maine came on a kickoff return by Bob North '70 up the middle.

The Warrior sophomores were shut out by Maine South 14‑0.
