West Harriers Split
Double Dual Meets

Maine West's varsity cross country team had a percentage of .500 last week as they won one meet and lost another. The first one took place on Thursday, September 18. The double dual meet pitted the harriers against Prospect and Maine South. Maine West lost to both.

The best placement by a Warrior was senior Steve Johnson's fifth place in the two‑mile. Maine West was crushed by Prospect 21 to 36 and by Maine South 23 to 34.

The sophomore and freshman teams did better as they both won. Dan Schlesser '73 took a first place for Maine.

Maine West fared better the following meet, and they defeated Forest View 17 to 46 and Conant 25 to 30. The top three places were filled by Warrior runners. Steve Johnson finished first, with Ken Kovar '71 right behind and Tim Watkins coming in third.

On the sophomore and freshman levels, both teams were soundly defeated. One

bright spot was sophomore Dan Ward's first place finish in the two-mile event.

Mr. William Barringer, head coach of the varsity cross country team, summed up this year's team: "The seniors have not been coming through as of yet, so we are counting on the juniors. We have a very young team." He also added that there is still time for any boy to come out for cross country at all levels.

Maine West's returning lettermen this year are seniors Jerry Krainick, Doug Keehn, Dave Keehn, Dave Lashway, Kent Drysch, Steve Melling, Bruce Eiter. Mark Frasier, Luke Burchard, and Bob Lidinsky. The one returning junior is Scott Gyssler.

Mr. Barringer has high hopes for this year. "If the seniors come around quickly, we could tie for the championship. But we must get past Maine South in our next meet. It will be tough because it's hard to make up 11 points in a few days."
