Today is the end of a week of campaigning for new Student Council officials, and election results will be announced this evening at the Election Jitney. To put it simply ‑ this year's election was a farce! From a class of approximately 950 students only three chose to run. The position of vice‑president had only one candidate and the secretarial office had none.
Admittedly there was not any competition for some of the candidates, but these students should be commended for taking the initiative to even run. Kids icomplain that they wouldn't win if they did run. It is felt that Student Council elections are just popularity contests. Whose fault is it that it is a popularity contest? The students are doing the voting.

To run for a Student Council office is a fairly simple procedure. The main requirements are that the individual must have an accumulative grace average of 2.0 and be a student of good standing. Two weeks before elections petitions were available for the candidates to have signed by his fellow students. On voting day each candidate must give a two‑minute speech. None of these things is difficult or hard to do, but only three students bothered to do them.
Election Week is over and nothing can be done now but to congratulate the new officers. However, there is next year; and let's hope that the students then take a little more initiative than was taken this year.
