Educational Opportunities Received
in the Service

If a student is planning on a military career after he graduates from high school, there are many opportunities that are open to him. He need not feel that his education has to be discontinued, because there are many ways he can get an education while in the service.

Sgt. Pruitt, a career man who spent 21 years in the army, told of the advantages of going in the army. "To begin with," said Sgt. Pruitt, "it's the shortest possible time to fulfill your obligation." He stressed that once you are discharged you have no more obligations to the armed forces.

"The army has excellent training programs and any high school graduate can qualify for them," continued Sgt. Pruitt. "We have three categories of education, each branching into more specialized training units. He specifically mentioned a program for those with two or more years of college where the army will pay for the completion of their education if, for every year left in college, he will serve an extra year in the services. All the armed forces offer this."

Sgt. Reith, an 18‑year veteran in the United States Marine Corps, related some of the advantages of going into the marines. "I feel the main advantage of enlisting is that you can pick the branch of service of your choice," reported Sgt. Reith. "Another advantage is that the two‑year draft plan excludes the possibility of any extensive education.

"There are two other advantages of enlisting in the marines," Sgt. Reith added. "The first is that the marines offer all types of armed services, with an air force, a navy, an army, and other more specialized units. Second, it's smaller than the others so you get more attention in your training field."

Chief Flores, a 14‑year navy man, related the advantages of enlisting in the navy. "The four year enlistment plan in the navy gives more opportunity for education.

"In addition, you can use your navy training in as many as six jobs where they recognize the training as an apprenticeship," Chief Flores said.

For any further information on enlisting you can contact any of the armed forces recruiting centers throughout the area.
