Thespian Society Sponsors Play

By LINDA WESTERFELD

Lights up, heads all huddled together like a black spot in a sea of chairs‑this was the scene this reporter witnessed at the tryout sessions held April 6 and 7 in the auditorium for the all school play, By the Skin of Our Teeth, sponsored by the Thespian Society. The play will be held May 21‑23 at 8 p.m. in the auditorium.

Thespian Society is a club for those students who like to work in stage productions and who have at least 10 points or who have done 100 hours of work on a stage production. After accumulating this, one is allowed to join and accumulate more points as he continues to work on stage productions. When asked what the purpose of Thespian Society was, Mr. Garth Boyer, sponsor replied, "Its purpose is to foster and promote appreciation and the development of dramatic arts in high school."

At 3:45 Mr. Robert Norris, play director, came before the students and gave everyone instructions on how to fill out the index cards that Barb Zeissler and Karen Gatsis had passed out.

As Mr. Norris talked, several students arrived late. To the surprise of those present, he shouted that they were too late to try out today. He seems to run a very taut ship.

At 3:50 tryouts began. Two names were called, to the sound of several squeals and sighs of relief. They were told to read the scripts, but much more differently than one thought usual. Mr. Norris told them to read as if they were robots, and then holler like a frump, then read as dinosaurs, elephants, and ballet dancers.

As more and more students went up, Mr. Norris asked them to do even crazier things. Some played hopscotch or skipped, others acted like sexpots, little old men and women, or lady truck drivers.

The sea of heads was starting to dissipate by 5 p.m. as students left one by one after trying out. Soon the auditorium became as empty and quiet as it was before the elephants and witches and sexpots had echoed within its walls.
