MW Holds Law Day

National Law Day, Friday, May 1, 1970, was acknowledged this year at Maine West by a seminar presented by the Social Science Department, according to Mr. Gaston Freeman, sponsor of the program.

The seminar was presented by Mr. Jonathan Howe, lawyer and a Maine graduate of '59, and two law students. The program was held from 9 until 11 on Friday morning, May 1, and was open to all Social Science students, commercial law students, and anyone having a free period during that time. The topic discussed in the presentation was "Juvenile Rights," according to Mr. Freeman.

Mr. Freeman has been in charge of the Law Day program at Maine West for the past four years. When asked about previous programs, Mr. Freeman responded, "Last year we had a mock trial which tested the legality of wearing arm bands at school. The ultimate decision was that it was permissible to wear them as long as they did not disrupt the educational process."

Mr. Freeman also stated that Law Day was initiated during the Eisenhower administration, from 1952 to 1960.
