Recently students got involved in the "Hike for the Hungry." They were interested in it and were able to do something about it. Now, Maine West students will be able to get involved in Ecology Week, May 9‑15, not just talk about it.
On May 11‑15 there will be seminars on a related subject, on each consecutive day, in L‑101 ninth period. Air pollution, water pollution, and pesticides, refuse disposal, and the population explosion will be discussed by those students and faculty who care enough to do something about it. Congressman Roman Pucinski will arrive at Maine West on Friday, May 12, for an assembly; attendance is voluntary by class.
A drive to collect garbage in the Des Plaines area will last all week beginning May 9 at the Des Plaines River. All those students, interested in the project, can come in grubby clothes and heavy gloves and meet at the water tower at 9 a.m. on Camp Ground Road.

During the entire week newspapers, aluminum cans, tin cans, refuse, and plastics can be bought to the garage near D‑wing. This will be a class contest, and the class which brings in the most garbage will receive a plaque.
This is everyone's chance to do something to show that they are concerned and are willing to give up some of their time to prove it. This refuse will be collected and sold. Any money received for this will be deposited in the treasury of that class which brings in the most garbage.
Mark Dunavant '72 went to Mrs. Martha Hanson and suggested that they do something about the Des Plaines River. A group of students got together in favor of doing something about it. With this show of enthusiasm Mr. Harvey Kelber contacted the administration office to get permission to hold an Ecology Week.
More information will he forthcoming from Mr. Kelber and Mrs. Hanson who are sponsoring this Ecology Week at Maine West.
