Alan Dreischarf '72 was injured January 9, 1970, in a trampoline accident in Coach Al Carstens' gymnastics class. While trying to bounce up to get more height, Alan lost his balance. In coming down from the bounce he landed on his forehead and broke his neck. While Alan lay on the trampoline, unable to move, the nurse and the ambulance were called.
At the hospital a breakage of the neck was diagnosed by the doctors. Over a period of four months including many days of therapy, three operations were performed to correct Alan's neck injury. One was in the neck area; another was to take a piece of bone from his hip; and the last was to place that piece of bone in front of his neck to support the spine.

Rosemarie Gloeckner, and he is now an outpatient at Holy Family every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:30‑2:30. He was released April 27. He is getting around well and plans to be back at school in September.
Alan doesn't know yet whether he will be able to participate in any sports or how or if he will be limited in participation if he can play.
As a result of the accident at school on the trampoline, Alan, was asked if he thought that it should be omitted from the gymnastics curriculum. He replied, "It's up to the students and parents whether they want it out or not."
When asked what he was looking forward to most on his return to school in September, he answered, "I am looking forward to getting back with my friends the most."
