VOL. XI, NO. 13

Oakton Community College To Open
Doors In Fall of 1970

At the beginning of May, District No. 535's Community College, which had temporarily used the name of Niles‑Maine Township Community College, officially assumed the name of Oakton Community College. The school will open its doors for the first time in the fall of 1970.

After considering no less than 125 proposals for naming the new college, the Board of Trustees finally narrowed its choices down to 19, then to seven, and finally selected Oakton Community College as the name. "Oakton" was selected by a simple majority vote, 3‑2, on a secret ballot.

Other names which were strongly advocated were Rachel L. Carson Community College in honor of the author‑poet of Silent Spring and The Sea Around Us; Adlai E. Stevenson Community College in honor of the late governor and diplomat; and Gwendolyn Brooks Community College in honor of the poet‑laureate.

The college will be located at 7900 Nagle Avenue, Morton Grove; and the new telephone number is 967‑5120.

In discussing the name after the meeting, Dr. Koehnline, president of the board, remarked, "It's not the name that makes the college. It will be the college that makes the name.
