Pom‑Pon Squad Picks New Girls

Chosen as the new 1970‑71 Pom‑Pon Squad are Jan Barkell '71, Sandy Currer '71, Roxy Doremus '71, Terry Engler '73, Karla Felde '72, Lori Feltz '72, Cindy Figge '73, Kathy Jordan '72, Cheryl Jaeschke '71, Diana Lambert '72, Donna Musselman '71, Valerie Neal '71, Rita Nelson '71, Gail Russell '71, Gigi Schueller '72, and Debbie Wojak '71. Sandy Garza '73 and Mary Paroubek '72 were chosen as alternates to perform when one of the permanent members is unable to perform.

The tryouts started out with 104 girls, a record high. These girls participated in the preliminaries, dancing to the school Pep Song. Out of the 104 girls, 38 were chosen. These girls were given one night to learn a two minute routine. Tryouts were held the following day, and the girls were told they would be notified about the results later that evening. The 18 girls on the squad were traditionally picked up by the old

members and brought to Jan Barkell's house for a celebration. There they voted for next year's captain and co-captain who are Gail Russell, second year as captain, and Sandy Currer, three year member.

The girls were judged on their overall appearance, pep, rhythm kicks, smile, and motions. The judges included last year's sponsor of Pom-Pon, Mrs. Jean Sides; the new sponsor, Miss Linda Haka; the senior members of last year's squad; and last year's captain and cocaptain, Gail Russell and Jan Barkell.

The girls are looking forward to choosing new uniforms. The funds for the uniforms will be appropriated by Student Council. Gail Russell stated, "We are looking for some very unusual uniforms, unlike any other cheerleading or pom‑pon squads. We are also open for any reasonable suggestions about ideas for new uniforms."
