The Maine West track team made a good showing in the district meet by sending down two of their relay teams and four individuals. A total of nine trackmen will be going downstate for Maine West.
The individuals are Delmar Hansen '70 in the high hurdles, Jack St. John '71 in the two-mile run, Steve Johnson '70 in the one‑mile run, and Jerry Krainik '70 in the quarter mile event. The state track meet will be held May 22 and 23 at University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.
The Warrior cindermen went looking for their second conference track championship of this year on Saturday, May 16.
They came in fourth place on a cold rainy day.
The winner was our arch‑rival, Maine South. Also ahead of Maine West was Glenbrook North and Niles North.
The Warriors defeated New Trier West, Deerfield, Niles West, and Glenbrook South. The meet was held at New Trier West.

A highlight of the meet for Maine West was John St. John '71 who won the two‑mile run with a record breaking time of 9:30.8 minutes. His time was more than 15 seconds better than the old record time held by Cole of Maine South.
Another highlight for the Warriors was Jerry Krainik '70, who also set a new record. His record came in the 440‑yard run event. Jerry's time was 49.7 seconds, shattering the old record time by one‑tenth of a second.
Three records held by Maine West cindermen were broken in this meet. The 13 feet 6 inches record held by Jim Mueting was broken by Mark Nelson of Deerfield with 13 feet 7 inches.
In the 880‑yard run Bob Glitz's 2:00.0 minute record was broken by Sandy Fitshet of New Trier West with a 1:58.7 minute time. In the low hurdles Steve Rose of Niles North beat Gary Pruitt's 20.6 seconds record with a 19.7 seconds time.
