Mr. Rider Addresses Graduates of '70

During the past three or four weeks, it has been my privilege to attend most of the end of the year awards programs and activity banquets.

I am proud of the successes and accomplishments of our students and have been greatly impressed by the leadership qualities seniors have developed during their four years at Maine West.

Many seniors have excelled beyond our expectations and have been granted scholarships and admission to the colleges of their choice. Also, many of our seniors who have received vocational training at Maine West have already accepted jobs with local industries and businesses.

During the past year an increasing number of seniors have expressed an interest in the humanities and in the worth and dignity of the individual. Through Student Council activities such as the AFS program, the Clearbrook Extension Drive, and the anti‑pollution projects, a better understanding of other people and their needs have developed.

Early in the 1969‑70 school year, a group of seniors requested a media to express current issues and the creative arts referring to the guidelines established by the newspaper seminar. Additional columns were provided in this year's Westerner; in addition, student forums were developed in which both sides of an issue were presented and discussed. Guidelines were set for responsible use of such freedoms, and under the direction of the Student Council, activities were carried on in a responsible manner. In my opinion, the activities were well planned, capably directed, and very successful.

Seniors, as you leave Maine West to assume a role in our adult society, I hope that you will be interested in working for the good of all mankind and your country. I wish you success.
