"I wanted to do something about pollution at Maine West and in the community," commented Larry Portman '71, who had suggested that Student Council form a committee to study air pollution.
"Most of the students were in favor of this idea, and it passed almost unanimously. The one opposition was that the school has no duty to the community, and I disagree very strongly with this," Larry said.
This motion was referred to public relations committee, who as of the

meeting on October 30, had not yet looked into it.
It was suggested that public relations contact an organization called Cleaner Air, which is a group of businessmen in Chicago concerned about pollution control.
Some of the inspirations that gave Larry the idea was the program "From Here to the 70's" shown on television and the fact that the week of October 20 was Cleaner Air Week.
