Jan, Jeff To Perform In
Senior Class Play

Portraying Sakini, an Okinawan interpeter, is the job of Jan Zabinski '70 in the Senior Class play, Teahouse of the August Moon. Sakini acts as the narrator of the play. He is an easy‑going, simple type who constantly aggravates the army leaders.

This won't be the first time that Jan will be on stage. He has been in the all school play, Noah, and also the contest play "Of Mice and Men," in which he had the part of Candy. Also, he has been in a number of acts in V‑Show.

Jan has been active in the past four years at Maine with Student Council and Class Council. He was also one of the main organizers of the forums. When not busy with these activities or the play, Jan enjoys "skiing, seeing lots of movies, and mostly bumming around."

Jan's advice to students at Maine is to "take the fullest advantage of your years in high school. Get involved with things. Don't be afraid to try different activities or subjects. Become socially aware. Just try to be a full and living person."

Speaking of the play, Jan says, "I think the play has a lot of well written and funny lines. The meaning of the play also fits in the complicated world of today, meaning that simple, real things are most important."

Jeff Hanus '70 portrays Captain Fisby, a man who has never had a decent break. He is confused, "subjugated" by superior officers, and an all‑in‑all failure, until he finds peace within himself, happiness, and love.

Jeff has had quite a bit of experience in productions at Maine. He has been in V‑Show all four years and in the plays, Noah, Flower Drum Song, Pajama Game, Bye Bye Birdie; and he hopes to be in Annie Get Your Gun. Jeff is also vice-president of the Thespian Society.

When not rehearsing for the play, Jeff enjoys swimming, football, baseball, and going out with his friends.

He believes a person should "take a stand on something, choose an issue or cause, and support it. Don't be apathetic."

In talking of Maine, Jeff said, "In the past few years much has been accomplished at school, such as PAR, more rights for students, and now a free dress code. When I was a freshman, I wasn't allowed to chew gum much less try to wear shorts in warm weather, but now . . . we've gained a lot, so hang in there!"

After graduation he plans to attend college and then go on to a business career, possibly teaching.

What does Jeff have to say about the Senior Class play? "I think it's a tremendous play, well written and very funny Scott Hayward, John Berner, and Jan Zabinski really add a lot of humor to it. It's going along well, and I hope everyone will have a chance to see it.
