Homecoming '70‑71 Starts Tomorrow

"Homecoming will probably bring back the memories of the good times and naturally the hard times of high school too. But most important it will remind me of all the wonderful kids and teachers I met that helped to influence my life."

This was Sue Black's response to the question "what do you think Homecoming '70 will do for you in the future," just one of the many parts of being a member of the court. The excitement has been building as all the classes have voted for their queen and she will be announced today at the pep assembly 8B and ninth period. The plan is to blacken the gym and shine the spotlight on the chosen girl; this represents a break with the tradition of announcing the queen as part of half time during the varsity game.

Caroline Metzger answered, "Well.., making Homecoming court has been the biggest honor ever given to me. The thought that in my friends' eyes I was good enough to represent our class, I just don't know what to say! Also, it scares me in a way, because I suddenly feel a little important. That is how I think it will benefit me; it has given me such pride, in myself and the school, more than I started with as a freshman. I am sure this pride will remain with me after I graduate, and along with it, I sincerely hope, my friends."

The floats for the parade are being built by the four classes and Pep Club this week after school in D wing. Float building will still be done tonight after school, so all students can still participate. This year's theme is "Western Union Victory-Gram." The float parade will go through Des Plaines tomorrow at 10:30 am, and will also be presented between games. The winner will also be announced; for the last two years the Class of '72 has won first prize.

Honora Quinn, another candidate for queen, commented to the question, "I will remember Homecoming as the time when everyone had fun getting together, meeting people, building our award‑winning(?) floats, the dance, and the general happy atmosphere. Most of all, I'll remember my Homecoming as a senior and being selected to be on the court."

Sandy Salerno answered, "Homecoming now is a lot of excitement, a lot of fun, combined with a good bit of anxiety. But years from now all it will be is some nice memories. It won't help me, or hurt; it'll just be some nice memories."

Perhaps the most exciting part of Homecoming will be the game tomorrow between the Maine West Warriors and the Deerfield Warriors; sophomores will play at noon and the varsity at 2 p.m. During half time of the varsity game the queen and her court will be presented their roses by Pat Snow, last year's queen. The lucky girl will then greet this year's A.F.S. student, Maria de la Torre, and present her with a bouquet of roses.

Nancy Sutor remarked on what Homecoming would do for her later on. "I can appreciate the excitement of football game and the tradition of Homecoming, and I can understand the logic and criteria for electing a queen. I am very flattered but I don't exactly know why. In years to come I will a) (hopefully) laugh and laugh or b) realize my true women's lib feelings and be offended."

"The Crown of Victory" is the title of the dance to be held in the auditorium starting at 8:30 p.m. The queen will be crowned by Dave Arnswald, president of the Senior Class. Tickets have been on sale this week for $2.50 per couple. Student Council has also been selling Homecoming buttons for $.25.

Jill Whetham commented on her memories of Homecoming in the future. "Years from now when I look back and think about Homecoming and being a member of the court, I think I'll still be thrilled at the thought of such a perfect finale for my four years at Maine West."
