Mr. Norman Ladd, the chairman of the Mathematics Department, was selected to contribute an article to the Illinois Journal of Education. Mr. Ladd's article related to the changes in geometry.
On September 17 it was announced that seven Maine West seniors had been named semifinalists in the 1970‑71 National Merit Scholarship Program. Students named were Jonathan Baldo, Kenneth Kovar, Christine Kron, and Doug Lauffenburger. Christine Schwarz, Marci Sosdian, and Kathy Owens were also semifinalists. The semifinalists must progress to finalist standing to be considered for the Merit Scholarship awards.
Student Council sponsored Activities Week to encourage students to become more involved in school organizations. On Tuesday, students were invited to view the displays and talk to the representatives of the clubs during their lunch periods‑. Thursday was devoted to getting students to sign up with the clubs.

The fourth annual fall Sports Spectacular was held Friday, September 11. The Dad's Club sponsored this event which began at 6 p.m. Admission was $1 or $1.50; the $1.50 included a chicken box dinner. The evening began with football games, exhibition laps by the cross country teams, and introduction of cheerleading, Pom Pon and athletic squads. A dance was held from 9 to 11 p.m. in C-wing gym.
Ballots were counted and on Monday, September 14, 1970, it was announced that Jo Bonaguidi was the new Senior Class treasurer. The other officers are Dave Arnswald, president; Mark Berquist, vice president; and Paulette Jados, secretary. Dave Arnswald, when asked what the Senior Class plans were, said, "Right now we're working on Homecoming, and we hope to sponsor things like an all school dance during the year. We hope to try out some new ideas in the future."
