November Opening for North;
230 Students Leaving West

November 3, 1970, is the day designated for the opening of Maine North High School. Progress had been delayed quite frequently because of the numerous construction strikes.

The student body will consist mainly of freshmen and sophomores. There will be few junior homerooms this year and no Senior Class in existence. This is because all upperclassmen were given the choice of transferring to Maine North or continuing where they are presently going. Approximately 230 students will be transferring from Maine West to Maine North in November.

The building is divided into three levels and is completely air-conditioned. To

avoid hall congestion, the students' lockers are located in a central area instead of in the hallways. The second floor is totally a student orientated area. All classes will be assigned here during their study periods. No passes for the entire floor are required, and students have the option of going to the lounge or to any room for independent study.

Mr. Robert Cassidy, Dean of Students at Maine North, commented, "We will attempt to follow the same curriculum both in academics and activities ‑ as the other three Maine schools. But size will be our biggest drawback until we are operating efficiently and become organized as a system."
