Maine West Features Variety of Clubs

Activities Week was held September 15 and 17. Clubs and organizations displayed information for their activities in front of the cafeteria at lunchtime. On the last day, sign‑up sheets were offered to students. From these sheets, invitations will be sent out to students who wish to join.

Following is information about Maine West's many clubs:

The Debate Team offers a chance for college scholarships. The art of argumentation and discussion will be a part of the Debate Team College overnight.

The purpose of Ski Club is to offer all students the chance to ski at a far lower cost than usual. The membership is limited to 350 people, and sign‑up sheets are at the bookstore. Students may obtain them as late as December. There will be a few weekend trips, and the club will also visit Wilmot Mountain and Alpine Valley.

Aquiana is the girls' water ballet club. The major event is the spring show when members perform their routines. Tryouts will be held on Septemeber 30.

The Home Economics Club is for girls interested in homemaking. Included activities are a demonstration and a fashion show.

From its title, one can guess what Future Teachers Club is all about. Some of the programs are to assign teachers to work with students after school, to tutor students, and to assign practice teaching at Maine and in other public schools.

All of the language clubs are planning new and interesting ideas for this year, including trips, slides, and guest speakers.

G.R.A. (girls recreational association) provides a girl with athletic ability. Intramurals include archery, tennis, gymnastics, volleyball, fencing, softball, and self defense. There will also be a "mother‑daughter playnite." Any girl may attend.

Thespian Society is the theatrical club of Maine West. Anyone who is interested may earn the right to join the organization.

Iota Chi Sigma, the speech club, includes individual speaking, poetry, original monologue, and comedy and serious readings.
