'Frosh' Day Held;
Freshmen Meet MW

Tuesday, September 1, 1970, began a new school year for incoming freshmen. The day started off with homeroom from 8 to 8:45 a.m. In this amount of time all freshmen received their lockers and class schedules, and got to know their homeroom teachers.

From homeroom all freshmen then proceeded to the auditorium for an hour long assembly which eventually became a pep rally. The rally introduced the Freshman Class to the Pom Pon Squad, Varsity Cheerleaders, Junior‑Varsity and Sophomore Cheerleaders.

The cheerleaders led the freshmen in a number of cheers and finally ended with the school pep song. After an hour the freshmen went to their assigned rooms for the ITED testing.

The test consisted of math, vocabulary, science, and social science. At 2:45 p.m. everyone was dismissed for the day. Tuesday, the first day at Maine West for the freshmen, held a few complaints.

Linda Joyce said, "I got lost a few times because the school is so big."

Pam Krotschel added, "I've got to admit High School is more exciting than Junior High."

Mike Adams commented, "Maine West is better than Algonquin because you get to know more kids ‑ guys and girls. I like being able to choose my own courses."

Laura Lovering claims, "It was confusing at first because the school is so big and there are so many kids."

Darlene Goslee said, "I've got a pretty good schedule. The teachers are pretty good, and the kids are nice."

Mark Skarning's only comments were "Strange, fun, exciting, and tiresome. Study halls are a little too long."

On Saturday, September 19, 1970, the Student Council held a dance for the Freshman Class. The dance started at approximately 8:30 p.m. and ended at 10:30 p.m.

Everyone dressed according to standards set up by the school. Only Student Council members and freshmen were invited, and admittance was by I.D. only. The dance was held in the cafeteria where refreshments were also served. Entertainment was provided by the Shades of Bleu.

A few of the upperclassmen had some comments and criticisms about the new Freshman Class.

Jan Barkell '71 ‑ There's too many of them. They all think they are 'groove‑moms.'

Jeff Goodey '72‑They are so small they can walk between your legs in the halls.

Rene Hoekstra '71 ‑ What new freshmen?

Jim Wacholz '71 ‑ I haven't thought anything of the new freshmen; they're so small I haven't seen any of them.

Carlie Ziesemer '71‑They all demand their way in the hall.

Bob Morrell '72 ‑ I think they are all sweet little kids!
