Maine West Begins New 'Arts' Course

The humanities course beginning at Maine West this fall consists of four major subjects, art, music, literature, and social studies (with an emphasis on philosophy). In each area, stress is laid upon man's reflection of ideas, feelings, and moods through various media, in past as well as in contemporary times, in our culture as well as in other cultures.

All upperclassmen who are seriously interested in this field are eligible for enrollment. This year, 120 students make up the two classes. Credit may be applied either to English or to Social Studies.

Weekly division of the subject matter varies, but usually consists of three lectures and two seminars. All students are required to keep a journal of human-oriented activities. Guest speakers, not

only from the Maine West staff but also from all cultural areas, will be brought in to give presentations to the groups. Field trips are also being planned to help the students view topics from many sides.

Mr. Dewane Barnes, one of the four teachers of the humanities course, commented, "I have been greatly impressed by the students' self‑motivation so far. They can learn more in this course because of the way in which it has been set up. I hope students can answer fundamental questions about themselves and also attain an appreciation of culture after completing this course."

The other staff members also involved in teaching this course are Mr. Grant Anderson, Mr. John Graef, Mrs. Diana Johnson, and Mr. Gerald Hug.
