Gridmen Suffer First Loss,
Face Deerfield Next

On Friday, September 18, Maine West suffered a double loss. In the opening game Arlington smothered the J.V. squad by a score of 20‑0. In the second game the varsity gridmen were defeated 26‑7.

The varsity game was very exciting, and the clash was actually more well‑balanced than the one‑sided score indicates. It was a rough game and a great disappointment to the team.

Maine West drew first blood in the second quarter. They worked the ball inside Arlington's 5‑yard line and scored on a running play.

Arlington came back eight minutes later with a 45‑yard pass for a touchdown. Arlington. however, failed to score the extra point; and Maine West led at the half 7‑6.

The second half was plagued with fights and quarrels. The calls seemed to favor Arlington, and this upset the players and coaches of Maine West.

Arlington then broke loose late in the third quarter. They scored three touchdowns in a span of five minutes making it a 26‑7 final.

On Friday, September 11, the Maine West Dad's Club sponsored the fourth annual Sports Spectacular.

To open the event the freshmen and sophomores played intersquad games and the coaches and players were introduced. The soccer and cross‑country teams were also introduced.

To end the event the varsity squad played the J..V squad in the "blue‑white" game.

On Saturday, September 26, Maine West plays its first home game of the season. This is also Homecoming, and a big crowd is expected to be on hand. Maine West faces a tough Deerfield squad so it should be an exciting game. Everyone wants a successful season and the best way to help the team is to go to the games and give the team some support.
