Bill, Colleen, Carol Win Council Elections

Bill Mitchell, Colleen Kelly, and Carol Gigante have been chosen by the student body to preside over next year's Student Council. In a three‑way race for president, Bill defeated both John Fisher and Ken Steinken. To become vice‑president, Colleen had to beat out John Leer. Mark Greene lost out in his bid to become Student Council secretary to Carol. All three new officers were announced on April 17 at the Election Jitney which climaxed the activities of Campaign Week.


Council Sponsors Movie

Paul Newman and George Kennedy team up with Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, and Woody Woodpecker to present a special night of entertainment on Saturday, April 24. Starting at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium, three feature cartoons will be presented, followed by the Academy Award‑winning movie, "Cool Hand Luke." Student Council is sponsoring the movie and admission is 50 cents. Tickets may be purchased at the door.


Concert Comes Soon

Sunday, April 25, at 3 p.m. is the time; the Maine West auditorium is the place, and the event is a spring concert. Presented by the Maine West Music Department, the program will feature a variety of music styles, appealing to all age groups. Tickets will be sold at the door, and admission is 75 cents for students and $1.50 for adults.


NHS Holds Initiation

Friday night, April 23, will mark the initiation of new members into the Maine West chapter of the National Honor Society. Starting in the auditorium at 8, the evening's program includes speeches by seniors Heather Brown, Kate Evans, Chris Kron, and Doug Lauffenburger. .Ir. Herman L. Rider will present the initiates; and Mr. Norman Ladd, Mathematics Department chairman, will be the guest speaker.

Math Students Excel

Eleven Maine West students were recognized by the Math Department for their scoring in the 1971 Annual High School Mathematics Examination. Sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America, over 350 Maine West students took the preliminary exam in February. From this group, the top 50 advanced to take another test in March. Senior Jon Baldo had the top score for Maine West. Three juniors, Bill Mitchell, Tom Hanna, and Russ Jacoby, also placed in the top 11. Rounding out the list were seniors Randy Lee, Jim Amling, Ken Kovar, Mark Hineman, Doug Lauffenburger, Marilyn Kalapathy, and Mark Dombrowski.


Pom Pon Has Tryouts

Mrs. Jean Sides, Mr. Norris, Mrs. Linda Szostek, and Gail Russell '71, Pom‑Pon captain, will be the judges for this year's Pom‑Pon tryouts. The girls will be taught a routine and will then try out the week of April 26‑30.


Karla Receives Honors

Karla Fischer '71 recently placed third in the State Bookkeeping Contest, which was held in Springfield. Karla, who is in the Office Occupations program, competed with 22 students representing 22 areas of the state.


City Plans Discussed

Mr. Wilton Battles, vice-president of the company which is planning the development of downtown Des Plaines, spoke recently to the Social Science Forum at Maine. In his presentation Mr. Battles discussed the implications for the future of Des Plaines and what young people can do to make our city a better one to live in.
