Diamondmen Roll, Win Six Straight

On Saturday, April 3, the Maine West varsity baseball team opened the season. Since then they have run up a 6‑1 won‑lost record in all games. The Warriors are 2‑0 in conference.

The pitching from the team has been excellent so far. In seven games opponents have scored just 12 runs. There would be even less than 12 if unearned runs scored on errors were not included.

Maine West dropped the opener 3‑2 to Oak Park on April 3. This tough loss was recovered, though, when the Warriors drilled Maine North in an 8‑0 win. Bill Besenhofer '71, Fred Campobasso '72, Frank Mitchell '72, and Dave Nelson '71 combined for the pitching duties and struck out 11 while allowing no hits.

Then on Tuesday, April 6, another fine pitching performance was turned in as Maine West had their second straight shutout, 2‑0, over Hersey. Besenhofer and Mitchell shared the pitching, allowing only one hit. Against Prospect on April 8, the hitting exploded in an 11‑5 victory. A four‑run first inning and a seven‑run third inning sealed the rout.

Closing out the non‑conference schedule Maine West returned to defensive play with a 4‑1 win over Evanston. On Monday, April 12, the conference season opened at Deerfield. Maine West won 7‑2, as

Bill Besenhofer pitched the whole seven innings while striking out seven.

On April 14, Wednesday, the Warriors played Niles North to a 3‑3 tie. Dave Nelson was pitching when the game was stopped after six innings because of darkness. Last Friday at Niles West the Warriors trounced the Indians 15‑2. Seven runs in the third inning put Maine West in front 12‑0, and they sailed to victory.

Tonight Maine West runs into the Maine South Hawks at Maine South. The Warriors hope to make it seven straight wins.
