Students who wish to enroll in summer school courses may now register in the personnel office. This year the Maine West summer school program will last from June 16 through July 28.
Mr. Eldon Burk, assistant principal, will serve as director of the summer school. Students are urged to register as soon as possible.
Maine students, non‑Maine students, incoming freshmen, and graduates may enroll in courses for credit or for the pursuit of special interest without earning academic credit. Additional information may be obtained by calling 827‑6176.
Mrs. Elouise Worthy, assistant to the Dean of Student Personnel at the University of Illinois, has announced that Maine West has received two of the 1971 Book Awards, presented by the University of Illinois Mothers' Association.
These books are presented in honor of Diane Hendrikson and Dave Atkinson who graduated from Maine West last June. Both Dave and Diane continued their studies at the University of Illinois, finishing their first semester with a straight "A" average. Only 237 students received this award out of a class of 7,142.
Both books are on display in the library with Dave's and Diane's names printed on the plates. For Diane the book is Western Psychology by Gardner Murphy, while Dave's is McGraw‑Hill's Yearbook of Science and Technology.

The Des Plaines Park District and the Maine West Art Department will co‑sponsor a kite flying contest on Saturday, May 8, at 1 p.m. The kite flying will take place on the Maine West athletic field.
Registration begins at 1 for the four classes of competition: first through third grades, fourth through eighth grades, high school, and adult. The kites themselves will be judged in the following categories: oriental kites, original kites, best engineered kites, and best fighter kites.
Mr. Aaron Brown, a buyer for Marshall Field and Company, will be the guest speaker at the Eleventh Annual Employer‑Employee Banquet. Sponsored by the Maine West Chapter of the Distributive Education Clubs of Illinois, the banquet will be held on May 12 at Heuer's Restaurant in Rosemont.
The purpose of the banquet is to honor people who employ the Distributive Education students from Maine West. In addition to Mr. Brown, entertainment will be provided by Maria del Carmen de la Torre, Maine West's AFS student.
Jenny Hinckley '71 is in charge of the banquet plans. She is being assisted by seniors Diane Luckey, Roberta Good, Diana Bergman, and Debby Hayes.
Superior academic achievement, research for individual projects, and assistance in the laboratory are the categories for this year's science awards to be presented at Science Awards Night on Tuesday, May 11, at 7:30.
