Maine Netmen Post 7 Wins, 4 Losses

In the conference opener against Deerfield on April 22, the varsity tennis team lost to last year's CSL champs 5‑0. In the first singles Steve Jackson '71 lost to Duane Neller 4‑6, 5‑7. Jon Richards '72 then was shut out 0‑6, 0‑6 by Tom Kussler in the second singles followed by a 3‑6, 4‑6 defeat to Jon Ferraiolo '72 against Dan Friedman in the third singles. In the first doubles the team of Doug Lauffenburger '71 and Rick Neetz '71 lost to Jon Rothchild and Tom Cath 4‑6, 3‑6.

Mark Dombrowski '71 and Matt Rusch '72 were then defeated 0‑6, 1‑6 by Brian Werth and Dave Shapiro in the second doubles. On Saturday, April 24, the varsity squad traveled to West Aurora where they defeated Wheaton North 3‑2 and LaSalle‑Peru 5‑0, but lost to the host West Aurora 2‑3. In the meet against Wheaton North Jackson opened with a loss to Ian Harris 4‑6, 4‑6. In the second singles Richards lost to his opponent 2‑6, 2‑6.

Ferraiolo then defeated his opponent 6‑2, 6‑4 in the third singles. In the first doubles Lauffenburger and Neetz defeated their opponents 6‑3, 6‑1 followed by a victory in three sets 6‑4, 5‑7, 6‑3 by Dombrowski and Rusch for the deciding win. The victory over LaSallePeru started with a 6‑2, 6‑3 win by Jackson over Falk followed by a 6‑3, 6‑0 victory in the second singles by Ferraiolo against Bob Glover. Tom Parker '72 then won by default in the third singles.

Both doubles teams then won easily to conclude the shutout. Against West Aurora the loss was a result of the three defeats in the singles competition.

Against Niles West on April 29 the varsity beat the host by the score of 4‑1. Their conference record is now 1‑1. In the first singles Jackson beat Larry Wolin 6‑0, 6‑3. Richards then lost to Larry Stone in three sets 4‑6, 6‑3, 3‑6, but Ferraiolo defeated Dave Weiss 6‑2, 6‑2 in the third singles. Both doubles teams then followed with a victory 6‑2, 6‑2 and 2‑6, 6‑3, 6‑3.
