Excellent Pitching Leads West To
5-2-2 Conference Record

During the past six ball games the Maine West pitching staff has only allowed six runs while hurling three shutouts. Despite this excellence in pitching, only three of the six games were won by the Warriors.

Maine West squeezed out a win over the Vikings at Niles North last Friday to bring their conference record to 5‑2‑2. Overall the Warriors have a 9‑3‑2 mark. They are currently running third in the Central Suburban Conference. In the 3‑0 victory over Niles North, Maine West scored twice in the opening inning. Behind the two‑hit shutout pitching of Bill Besenhofer '71, the Warriors had their fifth shutout of the season in 14 games.

Against Deerfield on April 29 Maine West pounded out a 14‑0 win to end a hitting drought. This time it was Dave Nelson '71 throwing a two‑hit shutout. The Warriors scored most of their runs in one‑inning spurts. With six runs in the second inning and a four‑run fifth, Maine sailed to victory.

A loss to Glenbrook South on April 26 was a 2-1 heartbreaker in which Maine West loaded the bases full in the final

inning with only one out, but could only score once. The Titans scored both runs in the first inning off of Maine West hurler, Frank Mitchell '72. The Warriors hitting was at a low, as only one hit was managed, that by Mitchell.

On Friday, April 23, the Warriors ran into the Maine South jinx and lost 3-1. West scored in the fifth when Dave Arnswald '71 drove a triple and Dan Moss '71 singled. South had scored single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Bill Besenhofer as the victimized pitcher, as West could only manage six hits for him.

A win at New Trier West was the result of another fine pitching job and a spree in hitting. Dave Nelson threw a three‑hit shutout as the Warriors won 8‑0. Maine jumped out in front quickly with three runs in the first inning. Dan Moss led the hitting with three hits.

Against Glenbrook North, back on April 19, Bill Besenhofer pitched the Warriors to a 1‑1 tie. Besenhofer only allowed three hits while fanning 13 Glenbrook hitters. The Warriors scored their run in the third on three consecutive singles.
