Pitching has continued to sparkle for the Maine West varsity baseball team, as the pitching staff has allowed only 23 hits and eight runs in the last four games. The Warriors are in second place in the Central Suburban League Conference with a record of 7‑3‑2. Maine West's overall record is 12‑5‑2.
After losing to Maine South this season in every sport except cross country, the varsity diamondmen whipped the Maine South Hawks last Friday 7-1. For three innings it was a pitchers dual between Warrior pitcher Frank Mitchell '72 and Maine South hurler Jerry Jones. However, West exploded in the fourth inning for seven runs on five hits, as they sent twelve men to the plate.
Ken Schroeder '72 led off with a walk. Jim Hanselmann '71 singled; Keith Moranz '71 singled; Rick Wolfgram '72 singled. Dan Moss '71 reached first base on a fielder's choice and was forced at second on a fielder's choice. Mitchell singled; Mike Bistany '71 walked. Bill
Besenhofer '71 reached base on a fielder's choice, Schroeder singled; Hanselmann struck out; and Moranz grounded out ending the inning.
Mitchell went the distance on the mound for West giving up one run on five hits and now is 4‑1 on the season.

On Tuesday, May 12, Maine West was eliminated from the state tournament as Niles West nipped the Warriors in the Main West district 3‑2. Niles jumped off to a 3‑0 lead; however, the Warriors came up with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Moranz doubled; Wolfgram singled; and Moss singled scoring Moranz. Dave Arnswald '71 smacked a single, and Bistany singled scoring Wolfgram.
Besenhofer pitched all six innings for Maine giving up three runs on six hits and was the loser. Maine outhit Niles West 9-6 but were beaten 3-2.
Maine West shutout New Trier West 4‑0 on May 7, behind the three‑hit pitching of Besenhofer. West scored all four runs in the first inning on three of their five hits. The shutout was Maine's sixth of the season.
Once again Niles West beat Maine West. On May 3 t he Indians won 4‑2. Niles scored two runs in the first inning on three hits and scored one run in the fourth and sixth innings.
The diamondmen scored one run in the third inning and another run in the fifth. Dave Nelson '71 was the losing pitcher for the Warriors as he pitched six innings giving up four runs on nine hits. Mitchell hurled the last inning for Maine West, retiring the Indians easily.
