Racketmen Sweep District Meet

In the past weeks the varsity tennis team saw their conference record drop to 1‑4 and overall record to 8‑8. Against Waukegan on May 3 only the first doubles team of Neetz and Lauffenburger could pick up a victory, stopping Grey Metula and Dave Morrison 6‑3, 7‑5. In the first singles Steve Jackson '71 lost to Stranig, 4‑6, 2‑6, while Jon Richards '72 was defeated 8‑6, 1‑6, 2‑6. Jon Ferraiolo '72 then lost at third singles, 5‑7, 3‑6; and the second doubles team of Matt Rusch '72 and Mark Dombrowski '71 were edged 9‑7, 1‑6, 7‑9. The froshsoph, however, defeated Waukegan by the score of 4‑1.

On May 6 New Trier West shut out the varsity netmen 5‑0. At first singles Jackson lost to last year's state runnerup, Jerry Karzen, 6‑0, 6‑0. Richards then lost in second singles, 6‑0, 6‑1, while Ferraiolo was defeated at third singles. In first doubles Rick Neetz '71 and Doug Lauffenburger '71 lost 2‑6, 2‑6, and John Anderson '73 and Dombrowski then followed with a loss in the third singles, 0‑6, 6‑8.

Against Glenbrook North on May 10 the netmen were edged 3‑2. Ferraiolo opened up with a victory at third singles, 6‑0, 6‑0; but Richards lost in second singles, 1‑6, 3‑6. Anderson and Dombrowski then won in second doubles, 6‑3, 6‑2; but the racketmen lost in first singles and doubles. On May 11 the varsity traveled to Maine South where they were defeated by the Hawks, 4‑1. The only victory came in the first doubles as Neetz and Lauffenburger outlasted the Hawks' Cook and Melapoulos by the score of 6‑4, 5‑7, and 6‑2.

In the district meet held at Maine West on May 15 the varsity won their first district title in the school's history. Jackson qualified for state as he was runner‑up in the singles competition losing only to Petchul of Glenbard East, 6‑0, 6‑4. In
