Student Council brought this year to a close at a dinner banquet held on Thursday, May 27, at Hackney's on the Lake. Both Jerry Palarz '71, President, and Bill Mitchell '72 spoke during the evening.
Jerry spoke of his past year in Council and the numerous responsibilities he was left with in January when Larry Portman graduated. Jerry also spoke about the many fallacies of this year's Council, but expressed great hope for the very near future.
Jerry said he felt that the open lunch program was one of the most significant advances that Student Council has made this year. Jerry sincerely thanked his fellow Council members and introduced next year's president, Bill Mitchell.
Bill did not wish to speak extensively on his plans for next year. He did speak, however, of his plans to organize Council from the very beginning next year. He plans a special orientation program for them first two to three weeks of school. This way Council will

prove to be more effective if it could prove to be more efficient. Bill said that not until Council is organized can any issue be brought forth.
He also spoke very optimistically about the committee which has been organized for research on open campus. Carl Wells '73 and Cindy Figge '73 have been chosen to represent Maine West students. This committee is working throughout the summer and will, hopefully, bring their decision to all the Maine schools by September.
Bill had wanted Student Council meetings to be held before school. This way only people who were sincerely interested would attend. It is doubtful, however, that this idea will come to pass.
Bill was also very happy about the outcome of the voting for upper and lower houses. "Colleen Kelly and I wanted to keep Upper House, and so the people voted against the amendments. I think we're off to a good start already as far as communication goes."
