Autumn Sports Kick-Off Exciting
Athletic Year

Judging on ability, versatility, and desire, Dave Arnswald ranks as one of the top football players to step on Maine West's gridiron. Dave has been very consistent for the Warriors, always playing heads‑up ball.

In football Dave played two positions, both first string. He played both quarterback and defensive halfback. Dave has also earned two varsity letters for his achievements on the field.

When discussing his coaches, Dave complimented both Mr. Eugene Zuccarini and Mr. Al Carstens. "They were always there to point out mistakes, and they were ready and willing to help."

Led by Dan Hammer '71, the soccer team showed a 4‑6‑1 record for their first year. During the season Dan was picked as co‑captain of the team and was later named the most valuable player. He was also the leading scorer with six goals and five assists. Dan was also on the varsity wrestling team this past year.

Next fall Dan plans to go to Northern Ilinois University where he wants to major in biology and get a minor in physical education. He would also like to coach soccer in the future as well as become a teacher. Dan believes, "Soccer is a highly skilled sport that requires a great deal of physical fitness to play."

John St. John '71 has emerged as one of Maine West's all‑time great runners. Hard work and great determination have made John one of the state's best runners.

This year in cross country St. John took firsts in all dual meets, triangulars, and invitationals except one. He placed first in districts, in sectionals, and fifth in state.

During the indoor track season St. John's time for the two‑mile ranked him first in the state.
