Changes Announced In Attendance

Attendance procedure basically has not changed that much, according to Miss Mae Jean Engen, dean of girls. "Any time a teacher feels attendance affects the student's grade he will speak to the student and notify his parents."

Miss Engen went on to say that the effect of unauthorized absences are now up to the individual teacher. The major difference is that there will be a consultation with the student, his parents, and his counselor.

General PAR is working positively although a few students abuse the privilege and do not reach their destination before the bell rings.

When asked about underclassmen obtaining ninth period dismissal, Miss Engen said, "I don't see where it will be possible this year. Some of the complications are transportation problems, whereas many juniors and seniors have cars. If all classes could be scheduled before ninth, there would be no need for it."

Open campus, where students would be free to do other things instead of being assigned to a study, is still in the discussion stage. "As yet nothing is definite," the dean of girls said. Maine West does not have the facilities to allow students greater freedom at present.

"The biggest change is that now the responsibility is left up to the parents to decide whether or not their son or daughter should stay at home," said Mr. Eldon Burk, assistant principal.
