Maine West cross country held its first double meet of the season on Thursday, September 17, against rivals Maine South and Prospect. The freshmen and varsity trampled both teams while the sophomores split.
Led by John St. John '71, the varsity took the first four places and crushed Prospect 17‑44 and Maine South 17‑32. Don Anderson '71 was second and Ken Kovar '71 was third.
Saturday morning, September 19, the harriers traveled to Crystal Lake for an eight team invitational. The freshmen were the only winners as the sophomores and varsity had to settle for seconds.
Paced by Klebe the freshmen has an unbelievable total of 12 points and also the first 15 runners pass through the chute.
Evanston nipped the varsity 44‑45. As usual St. John was the individual winner with Kevin Wright '72 sixth, Kovar ninth, Duntemann twelfth, and Dean Kamin '72 seventeenth. "Wait until the State Meet and then we'll kill them!" said a disappointed Kovar.
Because of a late bus Maine West almost didn't make it to the double dual meet against Conant and Arlington at Arlington, September 22. Coach Bill Barringer took the top five fresh men by car as the rest of the squad waited for the bus. When the squads finally arrived at Arlington, the sophomores had missed their race and the varsity race was about to begin.

Taft, last year's Public League champs. visited Maine West on September 25 and were soundly beaten by three very strong Maine West teams. The freshmen and varsity won by perfect scores of 15-50, and the sophomores won by a margin of 20-41.
When the first eight varsity runners entered the chute, the Taft hopefuls knew the race was over. St. John was the first of eight Maine runners, and he also set a new course record. Anderson second, Wright third, Duntemann fourth, and Kamin fifth were the other scorers.
Because of two new soccer fields put on the athletic field, the home course for the Deerfield Meet on September 29 was changed.
Before a Deerfield runner could find the chute, Maine had another 15‑50 victory. St. John toured the makeshift course well ahead of second place finisher Anderson. Wright was third, Kovar fourth, and Steve Forkins '71 fifth.
Maine picked up three more wins at Glenbrook South on October 2.
St. John with another win, led the varsity to an 18‑43 victory. Anderson was again second, with Kovar fourth, Wright fifth, and Gyssler '71, coming off a shoulder injury, was sixth.
